Question by Michael: Is 5500 rmb a month enough to live off in Beijing?
So I have been offered a job in Beijing, the salary is about 11000 RMB BUT I really need/ want to be able to send home about $ 1,000 or 6,500 RMB for bills I have at home. So, I get a housing allowance of 4350 RMB and I have found a few apartments around 3500, so I imagine I am good on most of the utilities too. So we are looking at food, I prefer to cook most of my meals, nothing fancy. Vegies, rice or noodles and some egg or meat and I am good to go. It is nice to get fast food or a cheap pizza once a week, and as for going out. I don’t really like clubs but I might go to the bar once or twice a week for a few beers, cheap Chinese brands are ok. SO who thinks i’d be ok and who says no way? I appreciate any advice, especially from expats who are there now.

Your real budget is 5500 + 4350 (housing allowance) = 9850 yuan. That is enough to live comfortably in a Chinese neighborhood within Beijing, but not anywhere near enough to live in an upscale expat area.
You will be able to afford a one-bedroom apartment in the Beijing suburbs, take the subway, eat at moderately priced restaurants, see an occasional movie, etc. Your compensation sounds typical for foreign ESL teachers. Foreign teachers have their own social circles and often help each other.
Note that you need to buy health insurance from a local Chinese company, unless your employer provides it. Many Chinese employers routinely provide health insurance as part of their compensation packages.
