Question by Matthew: What predictions did the Mayans make and which ones have been proven accurate?
I know they were .0002 days off with how many days there are in a year, and 33 seconds off with when the moon will rise/set/be full. What other predictions did this ancient civilization make and how many of them proved to be accurate?

Many very primitive societies (at least by our standard of primitiveness) had very accurate calendars. They had a priesthood who were able to make observations of the sky every night and they could accumulate these observations for decades, for generations. Sooner or later someone would figure out how to use them to predict the seasons.

In agricultural socieities, an accurate calendar is often a very valuable thing to have. The Egyptian civilization, for instance, was built around the agriculturally rich Nile valley. The farmers found it very useful to know when each year the river would overflow its banks, signalling the beginning of planting season. So they also developed a very accurate calendar.

Plus, there is a certain time of year when the days stop getting shorter and begin getting longer. The priests would hold some kind of ceremony at this time, and after many years of this people would come to believe it was the ceremony that caused the days to start getting longer. This was job security for the priests! 8^) Today we call this celebration ‘Christmas’.

So yes, the Mayans had a very accurate calendar, in fact it was more accurate than what the Spaniards had. The Mayans, Aztecs and Incas also had bigger cities than the Spanish had at home!

But the ancient Mayans didn’t figure their calendar out indefinitely. They went ahead a few centuries. If the civilization had lasted longer they would have revised their calendar to go further. Just because the calendar stops at 2012 doesn’t mean they meant for the world to end then. By that reasoning, the calendar here on my desk tells me I only have a couple of months, the world will end on Dec 31, 2009!
